THE ART TO THE DIGITAL CANVAS

34
We live squarely at the heart of the Digital Age and have begun to embrace all of its pretty conveniences. From apps that delivery our clothes and groceries, to video chats with friends half-way around the world, we have all snuggled comfortably into the digital lap. But many argue that in the warmth of that snuggle, we are becoming increasingly impersonal and losing touch with our creative intelligences. CanofJuice shows that a middle path is entirely possible – original artwork can be expressed through a digital canvas and still be as riveting as its paint-and-brush counterpart. A platform that actively seeks out up and coming artists and illustrators, CanofJuice ardently curates their work and finds innovative mediums to carry them – cushions, coasters, notebooks, framed prints and even stretched canvases.

Who said a statement of art must be up on display? CanofJuice places it in your bag and makes it your very own notebook.

Browsing through their prints and products one cannot help but notice the pop-artsy vibe that runs through, irrespective of the artist. Inspirations run wild from comic books, Bollywood stars, Indian folk art and deities, to vintage cars, stereos, transistors, portraits and Buddhas. Styles range from caricatures, to geometrics, abstracts and still-life, with a heavy influence of bold colours and contrasts. Funky, contemporary and anything but subtle, these prints glide smoothly in to the new generation of illustrative art and its patrons.

Pop-Art gets a desi twist in these coasters that borrow from Indian culture and make for great conversation starters.

Abstract art like this one lends itself as easily to notebooks as it does to a stretched canvas.

The driving force behind the concept, Bangalore-based Vishvan Saran, tells us that the name is inspired by the flow of creative juices that lends itself to these artworks. Intrigued, we ask this business graduate who has dabbled in sports management and organic agriculture, how we stumbled upon this idea. “I had friends studying in art schools wanted some of their work to be put up on the walls of my room, but apart from requesting them directly there was no other way to get their work. So that’s when the thought came to me of starting a platform which will enable illustrators, to put up their work and thus create a marketplace for original and affordable art work.”

Vishvan’s current favourite pick, these cushion covers are a part of the Mere Baap Ki Gadi series and feature amongst their most popular products.

Work on stretched canvas has the visual gravitas of hand-painted work and can be ordered to size.

Describing their space as a “collective of illustrators from across the world with various styles and forms of digital art”, Vishvan and his team supply to select stores across the country apart from their online presence. Finding new artists and reviewing their work is only a part of their process. They then start working in close association with the artist, curating work as they go along. Ideas and concepts get bounced around as they decide what mediums to display the art on. Vendors are then carefully sourced and final products assured of perfection before they are offered on sale. And, to top it off, as a sign of their commitment towards nurturing this form of art, their new offices in Bangalore come with a community space for illustrators to use free of charge!

Framed art is available at multiple sizes and so can be designed to fit any space – a privilege of digitally created art!
